how much to pay a nanny?
Ok, I work as a nanny and go to school full time. For the past 3 years I have worked for the same family 50 hours a week. I do light house work, prepare all 3 meals, do laundry, take care of a 10 yr old and a 5 yr old. I take to all activities (soccer, gymnastics, etc), I take them to drs, I do carpool from school etc. I make $350 a week, used to make $400 but family was having problems so we worked it out. Now, the little one will be starting all day kindergarten and I will be going to school in and out of the day and my hours we be cut. I also currently get holdiay pay and vacation pay. We discussed me getting more an hour and losing the vacation and holiday to compensate for the less hours. They came back at me with $8 a hour and 14 hours a week with no holiday or vacation. That is 114 a week!! The only reason I worked for $7 an hour before was bc I was guaranteed 50 hrs a week. I told the lady that I pay half of that a week in gas getting to and from and thats not going to work ..cont.
She asked me what I needed, and I was pretty blunt about either more hours at that rate or more per hour. What do you think I am worth and what should I tell her? I mean its really not worth it for me to work that few hours and try to work my school (i go to law school) schedule around her life. I feel like Iam being taken advantage of.

Get another job that isn’t even minimum wage in some states.

wow, these people are not aware of how hard you work, how under-paid you are, and how fortunate they are to have you! i suggest moving on to something that pays better. that family will miss having you around to do everything for them and be totally underpaid for doing it! sometimes it’s so baffling to me how much parents aren’t willing to pay to have their needs met!

if they cant offer you the hours then ask them to lay you off, and apply for employment insurance while you go to school. Your not going to do any good for yourself if you work for less than minimum wage and work for half the money you were receiving.
On your down time though you can still work a minimum number of hours before you have to report the amount of moneyyou make to the government while your on benefits.

go online and check out the rules.
Funny, I had an au pairthat said she did everything and got nothing…
she never got up in the morning, I had to get 3 kids n myself ready, my 18 yr old son did most of the housework (as he wasnt working) and my lodger would pick the kids up from school (on his way past back from work). She would sleep for 12 hours and spend all day and evening on line. She obviously had free bed and board and I paid her the going rate. She wanted to go swimming with the kids so we all went, I paid of course, she swam around enjoying herself while I tried to cope with 3 little’uns and one went under for a few seconds.(didn’t take them again after that!)
I took her out with me all the time, she never bothered going out although she could at any time as there was always someone at home with the kids…in fact she was NEVER alone with the kids for even 10 minutes! (not because I didnt trust her, just cos there was always someone at home too.)
She then said I didnt pay her enough and I took advantage of her!!! and that she was stuck in the home all the time and worked 7 days a week!!
(I offered to give her a lift to college every day but after one day she didnt bother going back)
I got rid after she tried it on with one of my best mates (an old man) just to get a british passport!
Good riddance I say!
Sorry, not saying you are like her but if you don’t like it, move on.
